How to Start being Consistent with Anything you do. 7 Effective Ways to build Consistency

Apr 19, 2024

Have you ever wondered why you begin something but don’t seem to finish it?

Or perhaps you find yourself waiting to be inspired before you start anything?

Do you worry constantly about how you are ever going to get over that procrastination?

This happens because we don’t fully understand the power of consistency.

We think it's hard work, and the moment this word is uttered, we are actually a little scared of it.

We wonder, what on earth does it imply?

Does it mean to wake up at 5 am everyday for no reason?

Do I have to post everyday on social media, if I want to be an artist?

Do I have to work 16 hours non-stop everyday?

These are all fear-based questions.

They come from not realizing that consistency is an Art in itself.

Consistency is the art of building habits that take over the management of your life.

Why Consistency Matters:

Consistency is the cornerstone of all inward and outward success, but most people get it wrong. It is not a matter of stress, but of enjoyment.

Here's how you can be consistent without feeling overwhelmed:

1. Plant the seed with a small practice:

Begin with a small habit. You know I’m going to bring up Meditation & Journaling again. That’s right. You should Meditate & Journal, every single day. Stop making excuses & start the practice. Building this one habit will prove to your mind that you are capable of change.

2. Create a Routine:

Routine means, you should know at what time you are going to be working on the thing that you want to work on. If you don’t know what you want to work on, set time aside to figure out this problem. Once you have a routine, stick to it as closely as possible. Sit down and take time to think about what you do before and after your activity.  You have to design it using a pen & a paper. “I meditate every morning,” is not a routine. “I meditate right after my shower, every morning, around 9 am”, is a routine.

 3. Keep yourself accountable:

Use tools like habit tracking apps to track your progress. Accountability keeps you on course. Find a friend who wants to do this with you, and begin. In our community, we have been self-tracking our Meditation + Journaling practice, and keeping each other accountable for a long time.

 4. Focus on Quantity, Not Quality:

Just do it. Don’t stress too much about quality, because quality is not an outcome of stress. It’s an outcome of easy, effortless creativity. You can’t have that unless you learn to try easy, and flow. Focusing on quality will make you choose perfection over action. Choose action over perfection.

5. Embrace Patience:

Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither are lasting achievements. Be patient with yourself and trust the process. Create a process that works, and lean upon it to reach your goals. Your process will reach your destination for you. You just have to go along for the ride, and enjoy it!

6. Don’t rely on Inspiration:

Surround yourself with inspiring people. Read books, listen to podcasts, or follow role models who embody consistency, but don’t rely on them. Inspiration favors action. To understand this, you have to start before you feel inspired, and see how inspiration catches up with you. Don’t wait for it. Begin.

 7. Forgive Yourself:

Learn to let go of yesterday, and start anew today. Yes, you failed yesterday. Big deal. Everyone fails. You made a wrong choice yesterday, but you have a new choice today. If you keep sulking about what happened, you will make it more likely to repeat. So shae off the regret, and start all over again. Consistency is not about being rigid or inflexible. It's about forging a path toward, one step at a time.

What is your greatest challenge today with staying consistent? Looking forward to your response.
